Following two years of successful business growth, Babel Digital has decided to take the next step and invest in developing a strong internationally recognizable brand.

Babel Digital started in 2006 as a Serious Games development studio, with the intention of focusing purely on language learning simulations; hence the language reference in the company name.

As the business developed they began to work on a wealth of exciting non-language related projects and though they still believe in the strength of games for learning languages and culture it is no longer the only area that they are focused on.

They wanted to create a name which better encompassed their now more diverse focus, so say hello to Ideonic.

Ideonic (i-d-on-ic) is an ideas-driven Serious Games studio. Their value proposition is based on the unifying power of imagination: they start with a string of highly creative ideas and blend them together with cutting edge digital technology to create effective new media learning and communication solutions.

Babel Digital’s First Project - Young Finance Manager Game

Babel Digital gained its first major project in August of 2006, when Scarborough Building Society commissioned them to develop an innovative game designed to teach KS4 young people about personal finance and budgeting and intended for rollout across local schools in Scarborough, with a national rollout planned.

As young people were at the core of this project, it was essential to consider their thoughts on the product. Part of the development involved working closely with two Secondary schools in Scarborough, exploring their points of view and incorporating their ideas and feedback into the final game.

The game uses terms and situations which occur in real life, giving today's teenagers an early insight into the opportunities and pitfalls of personal financial management.

A lot can change in a new financial year; therefore it was essential that game data could be updated regularly as it changed in the real world.

Babel Digital developed a product that has a fluid structure and created a separate game editor for updating the game data. This gave Scarborough Building Society the ability to update the financial information without any assistance.

As an example, in 2008 Scarborough Building Society has created a new update for Young Finance Manager, incorporating all the new tax and National Insurance bands for the current year, which changes all the characters’ budgets. It also has increased costs for some of the shopping items, to make the game as realistic as possible. In addition, having taken onboard feedback, the statistical data questions has been updated to make them more current and relevant to today's market.

Young Finance Manager gained a Pfeg (Personal Finance Education Group) quality mark seal of approval.
